Modal Selection In Pulsating Stars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Initial-value and periodic nonlinear pulsation integrations are carried out for a series of doublemode Cepheid models (PdPo 0.7) in the vicinity of the resonance WI + Wo = W3. None of the models tested shows persistent double-mode behavior. A new, semiquantitative description of modal selection, based upon the iterative theory of Simon, is introduced to analyze the nonlinear results. In the simplest version of this description, modal section categories emerge which are identical to those of Stellingwerf. Our hydrodynamic results also agree at least partially with Stellingwerf's in that we find a region in the red where the models approach (though never reach) simultaneous instability of both limit cycles. Analysis of resonant effects on modal selection in our calculations leads to the conclusion that models lying between the resonances WI + Wo = W3 and P2/Po = 0.5 may yet be viable candidates for double-mode pulsation. Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملPhotometric Modal Discrimination in Δ Scuti and Γ Doradus Stars
Abstract. The potential of photometric methods for the identification of l, the degree of spherical surface harmonic of a pulsating star, is investigated with special emphasis on Strömgren photometry applied to δ Scuti and γ Dor variables. Limitations of actual model atmospheres when fine precision is required for the calculations of partial derivatives and integrals, which depend on limb darke...
متن کاملToward self-consistent angular momentum transport in pulsating massive stars
I report on preliminary results from an ongoing project that explores angular momentum transport by unstable pulsation modes in massive stars. After briefly reviewing the underlying formalism for this transport, and describing a numerical code that implements it, I present an example simulation for a 5M model star. I show that prograde ` = m = 2 g modes, unstable due to the iron-bump κ mechanis...
متن کاملNLTE Spectral Analysis of GW Vir Pulsators
GW Vir variables are the pulsating members in the spectroscopic class of the PG 1159 stars. In order to understand the characteristic differences between pulsating and non-pulsating PG1159 stars, we analyse FUSE spectra of eleven objects, of which six are pulsating, by means of state-of-the-art NLTE model atmospheres. The numerous metal lines in the FUV spectra of these stars allow a precise de...
متن کاملStudy of an unbiased sample of B stars observed with Hipparcos: the discovery of a large amount of new slowly pulsating B stars
We present a classification of 267 new variable Btype stars discovered by Hipparcos. We have used two different classification schemes and they both result in only a few new β Cephei stars, a huge number of new slowly pulsating B stars, quite some supergiants with αCyg-type variations and variable CP stars, and further some new periodic Be stars and eclipsing binaries. Our results clearly point...
